Thugs of Hindostan Review: A giant period drama that Bollywood deserves

As you start watching Thugs of Hindostan, you’re teleported to an entirely new world. It takes a lot of efforts and money to make a film on such a big scale and Thugs of Hindostan is one such film. The producers trusted the vision of the director to make this magnum opus. Bollywood should be proud of this film and there are multiple reasons why.

Story

Before you’ll assume that it’s a Pirates of the Carribean rip off, let us tell you’ll that it’s clearly NOT. The story is simple which can be decoded in the trailer itself that the British want to capture a rebel and they entrust a conman with that mission. Aamir Khan plays the role of Firangi, a two-faced conman, who is sent to infiltrate the army of rebels led by Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bacchan). Does Khudabaksh learn of Firangi’s scheming ways or does Firangi successfully accomplishes his task is the main plot of the film.

Actors

There was a lot of hype surrounding the collaboration between two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. Khudabaksh played by Mr. Bachchan is undoubtedly one of his most remarkable performances. We have seen him playing similar roles in Shehanshah and Ajooba, but this one is the best of the lot. The gruff and grizzly Khudabaksh with his baritone voice is one of the strongest characters in the film. On the hand, Firangi played by Aamir, is funny and also tries to pull of a Charlie Chaplin act in a particular scene. Aamir Khan does a brilliant job and stays in character throughout as the jovial jester, but somehow is overshadowed by Mr. Bachchan’s brilliance. Fatima Sana Shaikh plays Zafira, a princess-in-hiding, and she yet again delivers a noteworthy performance. We expected more from Katrina Kaif, but it was disappointing as she hardly had any memorable scenes except two dance numbers.

VFX and Background Music

The audience has always complained that Bollywood films lack the quality of VFX compared to Hollywood. Thugs of Hindostan proves them wrong. The VFX is on point and it doesn’t look like shoddy work at all. The graphics look real and the sets magnificent. Hats off to the entire team who worked on it for bringing the director’s vision to the big screen. Talking about the background score, it is mind-blowing. Every theme is in perfect sync with the scenes and that adds value. One of the best background scores recently and you wouldn’t be disappointed at all.

The film could have been little shorter and the music by Ajay-Atul also was slightly disappointing. But apart from that Thugs of Hindostan will win your hearts.

Watch this magnum opus for its scale of production, performances by actors and the efforts put in by the entire cast and crew. Thugs of Hindostan is a winner.
