Movie Review: Kagaz Ki Kashti – A ship that sails right into our hearts

Watching a documentary on the big screen is not a usual sight as there are hardly any buyers and when finally you find a documentary in theaters, it shouldn’t be missed especially this one. Yes, Kagaz Ki Kashti sails right into your hearts and never leaves. The film traces the life and journey of legendary ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh.

So what makes this film a must watch?

1. Story

The film gives the viewers an inside look of Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh’s life. Coming from a humble background in Punjab and rising to prominence, how he achieved stardom and the hurdles he faced in his path forms the main plot of the documentary. The film also explores the humorous side of Jagjit Singh and how he used to strike a chord with his audience through humour.

2. Editing

The editing of Kagaz Ki Kashti is top-notch. The editor has beautifully woven together with archival footage and views from the likes of Jagjit Singh’s wife Chitra Singh, younger brother Kartar Singh, sister Geeta Prem, Mahesh Bhatt, Subhash Ghai, Zakir Hussain, Gulzar, Sunil Gavaskar, Harsh Goenka, and a whole lot of people who’ve worked with him. The story unfolds so naturally that it doesn’t seem stretched at all. Hats-off to Jabeen Merchant for making this movie into a masterpiece.

3. Music

The documentary relies heavily on music and it is obvious when the film is about Jagjit Singh. Youngsters today hardly listen to ghazals and it is not commercially viable, but the way Jagjit Singh immortalized ghazals is unmatchable. The film has concert footage where you can see Jagjit Singh performing to some of his most popular songs. If you’re a fan of Jagjit Singh, this film will leave you with tears in your eyes and you’re going to hum his songs when walking out of the cinema hall.

Kagaz Ki Kashti deserves the recognition and we hope that with PVR Cinemas supporting the release, it’s going to be a success.

We give this film 4 stars.
