Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, who got married on the 3rd of June, 1973, are one of those rare and genuine couples that redefine Relationship Goals even after 45 years of togetherness. As this legendary pair celebrates its 45th anniversary, we go back in time and revisit some of their most memorable films together:-
1. Sholay (1975)
We start the list with Sholay because both Mr & Mrs Bachchan were together in the film, yet apart. The love that blossomed between the two in the film didn’t hinge on voyeurism or rampant stalking, that happen to be the only keys to woo a heroine even today. And that chocking climax and tragic end was enough to make this one cinematic experience worth remembering!
2. Silsila (1981)
The late Yash Chopra’s greatest casting coup ever, Silsila explored extra-marital relationship, where Amitabh Bachchan’s character, who gets married to Jaya Bachchan’s one in a whirlwind of circumstances, continues his liaison with Rekha, the woman he actually loves. Steering away from screechy melodrama and cacophonous confrontations, Silsila, despite its theme, was indeed a heart-warming tale, coupled with soothing music.
3. Chupke Chupke (1975)
Hrishikesh Mukherjee was to the cinema of the early 70’s what Rajkumar Hirani is to the cinema of today- Simplicity with a tinge of humor. Amitabh Bachchan’s hilarious antics to woo the lady he secretly loves, Jaya Bachchan (who else?), still happens to be one of the most memorable and entertaining pursuits of all time!
4. Zanjeer (1973)
The film that took Big B to the skies of success and massive fan-following had him play the role of a police officer who bursts out at the smallest of imperfections. Rechristened as The Angry Young Man, he also had a soft and tender side to him, blossoming when the leading lady, Jaya Bachchan, playing a motor-mouth gypsy, is around. How can a daredevil cop fall in love with a nonchalant gypsy? You may ask! Well, as they say, opposites attract!
5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)
A cameo by the duo in Ki & Ka aside, this was the last time we saw the couple on the big screen. A running joke on the height difference between Big B and Jaya Bachchan is perhaps one of the funniest moments in the film, which later steeps into melodrama and constant pining. Still, it was great to see the two on the celluloid, still afresh, still dynamic.
