Modern day social media has wonderfully opened up various channels of communications and connected people from various parts of the globe, bringing them together as a community. But as the age-old saying goes, ‘Every coin has two sides’, and now every second person on the internet has become an opinion leader who sheds out criticism, otherwise known as trolling, like it for free.
The latest in the long line of victims of hatred who fell prey to cyber-bullying is none other than Suhana Khan, the daughter of one of India’s most influential men, Shah Rukh Khan.
Her crime? Featuring on the cover of one of the world’s most prestigious and distinguished magazines, Vogue.
One would wonder with the sheer amount of resentment that the photo shoot has generated online, the young lady must have committed some serious crime in the past.
But, the 18-year old has been nothing short of graceful in her short life so far, shying away from the spotlight and appearing tasteful and humble in not only the cover but also the interview accompanied in the much talked about issue.
It is also not the first time that she has had to deal with trolls in her life. As she says in the interview, “At home, things are normal and everything is cool, but the challenges are outside. I still find it hard because people feel like they can judge you. Especially on social media. Pictures from my private Instagram account get leaked. There are so many people talking about you. They don’t know you, and they don’t know what they’re talking about, but they’re just talking. And that can mess with your self-confidence.”
Dealing with such hate could mess any human mind up, much less the psyche of a kid who is taking the first steps in her professional career. But she has quite a calm head on her shoulders and knows how to deal with the trolls, adding, “I keep telling myself that haters are going to hate, but I can’t honestly say that I don’t get upset by it. It’s annoying, but I keep telling myself other people have bigger problems.”
So why has such a furor been created over her featuring on the cover of a magazine?
Is it her fault that Vogue, one of the biggest magazines from around the globe presented her with a once in a lifetime opportunity? Or is it just the fact that she is a star kid and not any other star kid, but the daughter of unarguably the most popular actor in the Indian film industry?
The trolls must surely not be such disgruntled individuals to think that a person, when presented with such a chance, would turn it down?
They must also surely have a basic sense of understanding that it is the magazine and not Suhana, who decided that she was a big enough of a name to grace its cover.
Finally, when the daughter of Shah Rukh Khan has her face on the cover of the magazine, they are going to sell like hot cakes in the market and the people who have the guts to mock and deride it, are the first one who are going to consume it.
So, to all the haters, the trolls & the bullies who have taken such offence to Suhana being on the cover of Vogue, you will just have to ‘Deal with it!’. She is a kid, let her live.
