#THROWBACKTHURSDAYS: Why Sunny Deol fell out with Rajkumar Santoshi?
Dharmendra and Sunny Deol gave this aspiring filmmaker the biggest break one could ever ask for. The film was Ghayal and the director was Rajkumar Santoshi. The film was a runaway BLOCKBUSTER and Sunny Deol became the new action star of the industry. As far as Rajkumar Santoshi was concerned, he too became a director to look out for.
Santoshi then went on to collaborate with Deol in two more films, Damini and Ghatak, in 1993 and 1996 respectively. After their hat-trick of hits, they both became each other’s favorites. In between, Santoshi also made Barsaat in 1995, the debut vehicle of Sunny’s younger brother, Bobby Deol. Now, till date, nobody knows the actual story behind the fall-out of one of the most successful and popular director-actor duos of all time!
Well, it’s stated that after Ghatak, Sunny wanted to make a film on the life of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh with Santoshi, but the director was going through a financial crunch at that point of time. It was during this time Boney Kapoor stepped into the picture and offered him a heavy amount to direct his production, Pukar, starring Anil Kapoor. It was an offer he could not refuse.
When Sunny came to know about the same, he was furious, and hence the fallout happened. In fact, he decided to release his film 23rd March 1931: Shaheed on the same day as Santoshi’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, starring Ajay Devgn, i.e. 7th of June 2002, this very day, 16 years ago.
But now, they both have buried the hatchet and are back to being friends again, and we hope they collaborate for their fourth movie soon!
