Shah Rukh Khan buys the rights of Kamal Haasan’s ‘Hey Ram’

Kamal Haasan is possibly one of the finest and gifted filmmakers and actors we have in the country today. Transcending the clichés dictated by the predecessors of Indian Cinema, the universal hero always makes relevant films that not only entertain but also give a straight punch to the gut. One of his pieces of masterstroke was the 2000 drama, Hey Ram, where he fearlessly depicted the horror of the partition of Bengal and the abolition of the Babri Masjid.

One of the key characters in the film was Amjad Ali Khan, played fascinatingly by Shah Rukh Khan, who stripped himself of all his starry trappings and gave a flesh-and-blood performance. And now, Shah Rukh has brought the  rights of Hey Ram, and the news has been confirmed by Kamal Haasan himself.

“Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time because by the end of it, I had nothing left in hand. Now, he is the brand ambassador for a watch brand. I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of ‘Hey Ram’ from Bharat bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it,” he said.

It will be interesting to see whether Shah Rukh plays the lead role or reprises his role from the original film or doesn’t act and just produces the film under his banner.
