Rajkummar Rao & Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree has turned out to be the most profitable film of the year so far. Made at a modest budget of 20 crores, the film raked in over 128 crores at the box-office. However, the blockbuster success of this horror-comedy may be short-lived as the writers and co-producers, Raj and DK, have accused the other producer, Dinesh Vijan, of non-payment of dues. They both collaborated on the film on a 50-50 partnership basis but now have stated they are yet to receive their remuneration.
A source says, “Trying to cheat someone of their money is one thing but to undermine their hard work is ridiculous! Stree is out and out Raj & DK’s creation. Whether it was writing the script, story and screenplay, getting Amar Kaushik (their first AD on Go Goa Gone) to direct the film or attaching Rajkummar Rao to star in it.”
The source further stated, “This was a passion project for Raj & DK, and they were not only overseeing the shoot on the sets throughout the shoot in Chanderi and Bhopal but were also leading every single process from casting, finding the crew, recce, shooting to editing, music, mixing and the final prints.” But now, a source close to Vijan has spoken in his support and given out his side of the story. He said how Vijan was the one who got the writers on board since another production house backed out due to their previous failures as directors.
He also said, “It was Vijan brought all the actors on board. Before approaching Vijan, Raj-DK had approached the same male actors who eventually made it into the film but they had refused. Raj-DK were supposed to financially contribute in the making which they did not, they also did not execute the film fully.” Continuing, he said, “Vijan hadn’t had a great experience with the duo in Go Goa Gone (overbudget) and Happy Ending (losing proposition) but still went ahead with them. The duo then tried to sideline the dialogue writer and didn’t want him to get credits.”
The allegations didn’t end here, he also stated, “They tried the same with the director (Amar Kaushik) but Vijan stood by Amar which is why he is doing another film with Maddock (Bala, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar). Raj-DK have defaulted on the contract and even their own agency (Madhu Mantena) feels that they are being unreasonable. They were also busy shooting for an Amazon show and couldn’t give Stree enough time.”
