No item songs like Chikni Chameli for Karan Johar again, Katrina Kaif responds!
Katrina Kaif may not be regarded as one of the finest actors in the industry, but she’s surely one of the most amazing dancers we have in the business. All her dance numbers are breathtakingly staged, fantastically choreographed and effortlessly performed. However, ever since the debate of the portrayal of the female characters in Hindi Cinema has begun, filmmakers and actors have become careful and cautious about their arcs. Item Numbers are regarded demeaning and only for the gratification of the carnal appetites.
Amidst all this, Karan Johar recently vowed never to have songs like Chikni Chameli in his films again. He too, seconded the fact that Item Songs are only placed in the film’s narrative for the objectification of the actresses. He said the word ‘Item’ itself is derogatory and an insult to a woman. However, Katrina Kaif, who has done quite a few songs like the one mentioned above, begged to differ. In a recent interview, she said, “It is all about the individual performing the song. I never felt objectified in Chikni Chameli or Sheila Ki Jawaani, rather I enjoyed the song and the dance.”
She also stated, “We don’t need to characterize every song, where ‘a woman is celebrating herself and performing, as objectifying women. It all depends on the angle and lens.”
