This is what kept Karan Johar in the closet until now

So the Dharma Chief has finally come out of the glass door closet that he guarded himself in since time immortal, and his steps outside of it surely have created waves, but in the wrong waters! When Karan Johar was questioned about his reason for not coming out earlier, he expressed his fears of being behind bars. If he did it at all, which was taken up by many, causing tides of rage and criticisms and terming it baseless.

Perhaps the infamous Section 377, terming same-sex intercourse an actionable offence, may have given the star kid mentor nightmares at the very thought of uttering the three words.

His fears were put to rest by providing clarity and support to the Bollywood all-rounder by the LGBTQ community.

LGBTQ activists rightly stated that partner preference is a personal choice, and being open about it does not invite jail term.

However, should his fears come true, he has all the support he can get from the empathetic community, even if it means going behind bars with him and causing and all-out revolt against the system, even if he does not wish to support them back.
