Sonam Kapoor shared she faced molestation when she was 13
At a recent interview with Rajeev Masand, Sonam Kapoor opened up on being molested in public. It was during the actress’ round table conference where Radhika Apte, Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan and Anushka Sharma where also present.
Sonam said, “I was going to watch a Raveena Tandon-Akshay Kumar film at Gaeity theatre. I was with my friends, we were just like 13-14 year olds and we were sitting in stalls. We all walked in but we wanted to get samosas and walked by forming like a human chain. I was the last while coming back, coz obviously I was the tallest. And a man came from behind and held my breasts. I started shaking and shivering, and I didn’t know what was going on. I started crying right there but I didn’t speak about it and I sat and finished the film. Coz I felt I had done something wrong. I didn’t talk about it for a good two years. But that’s not something. I know so many of my friends who’ve gone through something like that over and over again. It’s so important for films like ‘Kahaani’ where at least the issues come forward and you can talk about it.”
The brave actress went ahead and stated the reason for her bold confession and said, “The reason I spoke out about my sexual abuse is not to get people to feel sorry for me but to give others who have had similar circumstances the confidence to talk about it. I allowed someone to have sex with me at the age of nine, not understanding fully what it meant and my biggest fear after was that my mother would find out. I felt it was my mistake and so I kept it hidden for years. If I had the confidence or awareness to confide in my parents it would have saved me years of complexes about my own sexuality. It’s important that parents remove the taboo around the word sex or private parts so kids can speak openly and be saved from potential abuse.”
