Bollywood films to be screened on private channels in Pakistan

After the 2016 Uri attacks, it’s been five months since Pakistan blocked cable networks from showcasing Indian movies. Lahore’s High Court had lifted the ban on Monday quoting the terms of agreement made between the channels and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah granted permission to private channels to screen Indian films on a provisional term, following a petition filed by Leo Communication who challenged the ban which was imposed by PEMRA in October 2016.

It was also seen that Advocate Taffazul Rizvi, counsel for Petitioner, had an argument regarding how TV channels can officially broadcast only those Indian shows which fall into the category of ‘entertainment’

Further, the petitioner also claimed that he had been in a contract for a 15-year licensed by PEMRA to operate the Filmazia in 2010. It had granted permission to broadcast 10 percent foreign content including Indian under the license. “The channel because of running foreign (Indian) content became popular and received highest viewership ratings across the country,” he said.

Let’s see what the court has to say about the Indian Cinema on March 2
