Shoojit Sircar’s drama, October, starring Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu, opened to tremendously positive reviews across the country, with critics calling the film not only the best to come out of 2018 but also in many many years. However, given the subject and the narrative of the movie, it was expected to open to a moderate response at the ticket-windows.
Far removed from the glossy, glamorous and larger-than-life world of Judwaa 2 and Main Tera Hero, it was a brutally honest film rooted in the harsh realities of the world; hence, it didn’t have that universal appeal, or maybe it’s just waiting to be discovered.
Just like Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, the film opened to a meagre 5.04 crore, thus becoming Varun Dhawan’s lowest opener till date. And early trends suggest the film didn’t show much growth on Day 2 either and could collect between 4-5 crores.
However, Varun isn’t bothered by the collections at all, as this was one film where he gave all his heart and soul, and very few films in an actor’s career give them the opportunity to strip apart all their stardom and be completely naked in front of the camera. It happened with Shah Rukh Khan in Swades, Ranveer Singh in Lootera and now Varun Dhawan in October.
Even if it doesn’t mint as much money as his previous films, October is likely to be remembered as one of Varun’s best.
