Anurag Kashyap is an outspoken man, he has never minced his words and is often open about issues that are affecting the Industry. Recently when he was asked on the shutting down of major studios in India, he partly held himself responsible. The director said, “When I see the news of studios shutting down and then there’s the image of ‘Bombay Velvet’ right at the top, I do feel responsible. It hurts”.
The filmmaker also said, “We all need studios. They brought in a certain streamlining of movies. They also brought in a lot of mistakes. Many people from the industry are saying that one of the major reasons for the studios to shut down is because the actors and directors are charging a bomb. I’ll tell you one small thing. The Forbes highest paid celebrities list was out recently. There were 4 Indian actors(Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan) and 6 Hollywood actors. The film’s earning of the 6 Hollywood actors is in billions of dollars. Ours is 300 crores and they are still on that list. If you look at the ratio, of a business versus the income of an actor, you’ll see the disparity. In the list, there is an actor whose films are making 300 crores and also actors whose films are making 1.2 billion dollars. Some are also below our actors. Now you see where the problem is.”
Anurag also added that many people from the Industry were blaming his film ‘Bombay Velvet’ and Hrithik’s recently released ‘Mohenjo Daro’ for the failure of studios and that it was unfair to pinpoint just these two films.
Wonder what the response of SRK, Salman, Akshay and Amitabh would be to Anurag’s comments.
