If his statement on the existence of the Internet during The Mahabharata wasn’t laughable and bizarre enough, the Tripura Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb, just redefined silliness and foolishness recently. The minister was talking about beauty pageants and the process behind crowing the contestants, and in the process, criticized the crowing of former Miss World, Diana Hayden, who won the pageant in 1997. When it came to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her victory as the Miss World in the year 1994, Biplab Kumar mercifully had some lenient things to say. All this happened in his state, Tripura, where he was present to address a day-long workshop on handlooms and handicrafts.
This is what his statement was, “Whoever contested the international beauty pageants won. For five consecutive years, we won the Miss World/Miss Universe awards. Diana Hayden won it too. Do you think she should have won the title? We see women as goddess Laxmi, Saraswati. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan represents the Indian women. She became the Miss World and that’s all right. Diana Hayden does not fit to that class of beauty.”
Some ministers really need to understand every statement they make at a public forum unintentionally attracts the attention of the media. And they also have to learn to sometimes keep their personal opinions to themselves.
Talking about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the actor is gearing up for her next, Fanne Khan, releasing on the 13th of July, 2018. She might also be seen in the remake of the 1964 classic, Woh Kaun Thi?
