MOVIE REVIEW: Stree, an unconventional genre-bender

Amar Kaushik’s ‘Stree’ will not only scare you but also make you laugh, thanks to strong performances and an absurd yet commendable storyline.

Here are 4 reasons why you should watch ‘Stree’

1. The Story

Set in the quaint village of Chanderi, the story is based on a folklore of a revengeful spirit that roams the streets at night and abducts men. Writers Raj-DK have explored this spooky tale and have given the story the perfect blend of horror and comedy just like ‘Go, Goa, Gone’. The writing is top-notch with some really meaningful jokes that target the gender-disparity in the country.

2. Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi

Rajkummar Rao isn’t completely new when it comes to horror films, he was at his best in Ragini MMS and the same could be said for ‘Stree’. He plays the role of a ladies tailor and he brings out his A-game yet again. Pankaj Tripathi, on the other hand, continues to win our hearts with his commendable comic timing that evokes laughter in almost every scene.

3. The perfect blend of horror and comedy

The film does complete justice to both the genres. There are very few films in this genre, which are as entertaining as this one. The combination of frequent thrills and scares along with comedy, which never goes over-the-top, the film perfectly serves its purpose.

4. Brilliant supporting cast

The film thrives on performances and acting. Rajkummar Rao is brilliantly supported by his co-actors Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee. The performances by Aparshakti and Abhishek make them noticeable even in a film which stars Rajkummar and Pankaj Tripathi. Perfect comic timing, natural reactions and brilliant acting, director Amar Kaushik’s control over his characters is impeccable.

All in all ‘Stree’ is a mad-entertainer, Go watch it. We give it 3/5 stars.
