Never compromising his craft for acting or the knack for choosing the right scripts for the sake of a fat pay-cheque, he has time and again proven why he’s one of the most respectable and inimitable talents in the country. We all saw a 7-minute glimpse of his genius, when a clip from his upcoming film, Manto, released on social media last year.

Talking about that very film Manto, directed by Nandita Das, the film-maker behind the explosive and immensely impactful, Firaaq, it will be screened at this year’s Cannes, and the news was confirmed by Nandita Das herself. She took to her social media account and shared the news with everyone on her timeline-

With that, Manto would be Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s eight film in the festival. This, people, is a record worth fighting for, worth tying with. From Gangs of Wasseypur to Miss Lovely to Bombay Talkies to The Lunchbox, Nawaz has made a lasting impression on almost everyone involved with Cannes.

The film will be screened under the Un Certain Regard category, which means films that portray unique stories in their traditional ways.

Manto also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Rasika Dugal, Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles. Once the film is ready for its theatrical release, we are assured its going to make an equally powerful impact as Nawazuddin’s earlier films. Till then, let’s not allow this mammoth achievement of the actor go unnoticed and let’s root for him this year, and not just concentrate on the fashion hits-and-misses, which ultimately reduces a festival of this stature into a fashion show.
