Pahlaj Nihalani has his reasons on passing ‘Rangoon’ with a U/A certificate

Vishal Bhardwaj directorial ‘Rangoon’ has been awarded the U/A certificate to the film after the cuss words like ‘Bakchod’ and ‘Bastard’ were taken off from the film from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film is set in the era of 1940, and is believed to depict a love triangle amidst the chaos of World War II starring, Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan.

But it seems like the chief of CBFC has some more issues with the film. Nahlani gave an interview to a leading daily and said, “We’ve asked all such scenes to be deleted. Drug abuse and smoking are not things we encourage in our films. Smoking may have been fashionable in the past. But now, it is as unacceptable as eve-teasing and stalking. To see glamorous characters getting high on drugs is not CBFC’s idea of an evening of fun at the movies.”

A source close to the film added, “Since the film is set in the 1940s when it was considered fashionable to smoke, the characters are shown smoking constantly. In such cases, it’s better to keep the statutory scroll on throughout the film. But we leave it to the film’s makers to decide what they want to do.”

Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Udta Punjab is the best example of how many issues the CBFC has with drug abuse in a film.
