Before Padmavati, here a list of 6 Bollywood films that were banned due to political reasons!

Padmavati is one of the most controversial films of 2017. Ever since it’s announcement, the film has been facing issues by various communal groups. Even threats of beheading Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali were made. Eventually, the makers had to shift the release date of Padmavati.

Well, this is not the first time when Politics have interfered in Bollywood. Before Padmavati also movies were banned and protested in various states. Take a look at the movies here:

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which released last year faced a lot of opposition from the political parties post-Uri attacks. After the attacks, IMPPA banned Pakistani artists from working in the country. The film received a lot of criticism and opposition as Pakistani actor Fawad Khan was a part of the romantic drama. After a lot of criticism, Karan Johar had to release video in which he said: “he will not engage with talent from Pakistan.”

Like Padmavati Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historic drama Bajirao Mastani was also opposed by various political groups for altering history. There were protests held in Pune by the descendants of the Peshwa and Chhatrasal dynasty.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela… Ram-Leela

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela… Ram-Leela was also opposed by various political groups for its controversial title. A petition was filed against the film in the Gujarat court for by the Rajput Samaj of Ahmedabad for misinterpreting the history of the Rajput and Rabari communities. The Hindu groups even had an issue with the title and as a result, the makers changed the title from Ramleela to Ram-Leela, and then to Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela.

Even Aamir Khan’s PK was surrounded by controversy for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindu and Muslim group. While the Members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanded the censor board to remove an objection scene, The Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanded a ban on the film.

Shah Rukh Khan’s My Name Is Khan also faced objection by a political party after SRK criticised that Pakistani players were not bought by the clubs to play IPL. The political party wanted an apology from King Khan for his statement and they had even threatened to halt the release of the film.

Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal satirical comedy-drama generated a lot of controversy over the depictions of prominent Hindu gods and Indian spiritual traditions. Jalandhar State Mahila Congress Vice President Nimisha Mehta lodged a complaint against Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindu’s. The screening of the film was stopped in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur and other places in Punjab.
